MIRROR - MIRROR *
The time we spend waiting for things in public is, more often than not, wasted time. We might treat these rare moments of boredom with apathy, or worse - disdain. We wait with other humans surrounding us, but we turn inwards, to our phones, our thoughts, our worries. If the places we spent time waiting around provided more opportunity to look out of ourselves, maybe we could reconnect with our community or our fellow humans.
a station to connect communities and individuals
Soft lighting and penetrations in the structure provide safety and visibility of users. The composite concrete surfaces are easily cleanable to allow for easy maintenance and the reinforced traffic barrier protects those on the platform from oncoming traffic.
This bus rapid transit station is located in a prominent commercial corridor which connects unique neighborhoods, old and new. The residents are as unique as the neighborhoods they live in. This station gives the residents, who will soon rely on this transit line, a chance to connect with each other using a simple tool - the mirror. The quote embedded in the polished steel panel comes from Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities. Its purpose is to draw the attention of the riders to the surface overhead. In reading the quote, provided in English and Spanish (the two most spoken languages of the corridors riders), the riders might catch a glance of their fellow rider as they too read the quote above. Maybe even giving them something to have a conversation about as they wait.
