THE HOT SEAT *

Every year the Pittsburgh Polar Bear Club jumps into the frigid waters of the Monongahela River. It’s been described as quick and exhilarating, something “The Hot Seat” was inspired by. Sponsored by Epic Metals, this design marries the precise, thin, and reflective nature of metal decking with the stark, raw quality of steel members to create a structure that celebrates the vibrancy of metal. The interior changing rooms contrast the cold exterior with the warmth of cork lined floors, canvas partitions, and seats heated by coals which sit in a bed made from metal decking. The entire structure is designed for extremely fast assembly and disassembly, using self-locking hinge joints.  Within the structure you can experience a blend of elements that are not only useful but comfortable as well. The exterior caters to swimmer and spectator alike, providing seating which is heated by the thermal bridge from the interior and also faces south, towards the sun. Finally, you can enjoy a hot beverage at the built-in bar and continue on your way.

The design incorporates several mechanical and thermal components which use the structural and conductive qualities of metal to create an easily maintainable and functioning structure.
